Strength Header - Mission

At Tufts Strength & Conditioning, we believe that creating a challenging and competitive environment is the most important aspect to allow our athletes to improve, develop and perform.

Our goal is to create an enjoyable and unique experience for every team and individual athlete throughout their time at Tufts.  We do this by creating an atmosphere that develops our athletes physically, challenges them psychologically, and teaches leadership capabilities.  Athlete's will graduate with improved strength, speed, mobility, endurance, and a knowledge of recovery techniques.

Strength Staff

Under the guidance of Director of Sports Performance Kevin Maxen and his assistants, the Tufts strength and conditioning program is committed to maximizing the on-field performance of every student-athlete.

The program combines weight training, plyometric, stretching and flexibility exercises, running and proper nutrition to enhance each student-athlete's ability to compete. In addition to working directly with a number of varsity teams, Maxen's responsibilities include overseeing the Ames Human Performance Center and the Varsity Weight Room at Tufts' Steve Tisch Sports and Fitness Center. He has been fortunate to have worked with countless great Jumbos student-athletes, including half a dozen individual national champions and ten national championship teams. Maxen also teaches the popular Advanced Principles of Exercise Class.

Nutrition Header Strength

Maximizing on-field potential is more than just lifting weights and running; it's also ensuring that each student-athlete is benefiting from a nutritional and dietary program specific to their needs. Below are some resources to guide Tufts student-athletes to proper nutrition.

Facility Header Strength

Ames & Lunder Center / Varsity Weight Room

The Ames Human Performance Center / Lunder Fitness Center, also known as the Varsity Weight Room, is a 6,000 square-foot facility featuring cardio equipment, free weights and machines.  In addition to a variety of athletic development equipment, 2,500 square feet of indoor turf is available to help varsity athletes, personal training clients, and physical education students increase their health and performance.

Originally opened and dedicated in 1993, the Ames Center served as the main fitness facility for the entire university for 19 years until the new Steven Tisch Sports and Fitness Center opened in 2012.
