NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine - Tufts University Women's Cross Country opened their season by winning the Bates Invitational with a score of 97 in the 5,000-meter race on Saturday afternoon at Pineland Farms.
While the team scoring at regular cross country meet include the top five runners, this event scores the top 10 finishers from each team. The Jumbos finished well ahead of host and runner-up Bates who totaled 194 points. Following Bates was Middlebury in third place (241 points) and Connecticut College who finished last with 354 points.
Jumbo sophomore Danielle Page had the best time (18:13.8) of all 87 runners. She finished in first overall ahead of senior teammate Sabrina Gornisiewicz, who was the runner-up with an 18:19.3 time in her first-ever collegiate race. Sophomore Anna Slager (18:27.6) finished third overall while freshmen Meghan Davis (18:35.2) and Lauren Pollak (18:42.2) followed closely as the Jumbos earned five of the top six spots.
Freshman Coco Arcand (19:10.8) finished 11th in her first collegiate race. Classmate Lexi Quinn (19:11.3) earned a 12th-place finish in her collegiate debut. Senior Rhemi Toth (19:20.8) crossed the line in 17th while juniors Johanna Ross (19:29.3) and Cameron Rusin (19:39.3) rounded out the ninth and 10th Jumbo scorers in 18th and 23rd place overall.
Nicole Kerrigan (19:42.1), Lia Clark (20:05.5), Ann Roberts (20:17.9), Kendall Roberts (20:25.5), Olivia Martin (20:33.0), Melissa Rowland (20:39.3), Kate Bidgood (20:40.5), Lucy Tumavicus (20:40.6), Stephanie Mittaz (21:05.8), Chiara Cinquemani (21:12.9), Tess Schaftel (21:32.7), Emily Murray (21:39.4), Sarah Sandlow (22:03.5), Maura McCormick (22:09.2), and Madeleine Oliver (22:17.7) also competed for the Jumbos.
Tufts returns to action next Saturday at the Bowdoin Invitational. Start time at the Pickard Field Cross-Country Course in Brunswick, Maine is scheduled for noon.
