Win Over Trinity Saturday Afternoon Keeps Volleyball's NESCAC Record Perfect

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Tufts volleyball remain undefeated in conference play, picking up a three set win over Trinity on Saturday afternoon in Oosting Gymnasium. The Jumbos are in first place in the conference standings with half of their NESCAC schedule complete.  

With the win the Jumbos move to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in NESCAC play.  Trinity falls to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in conference play with the loss.

Tufts finished the afternoon with a .270 hitting percentage and served up six aces as well. Freshman Brigid Bell tallied seven kills on the day, as did Jumbo co-captain Elizabeth Ahrens. Rookie Rachel Furash and sophomore Angela Yu combined to dish out the Jumbos 25 helpers on the day as Furash finished with 14 assists and Yu with 11. Tufts took advantage of seven Bantam errors to win the first set, 25-15, despite a .167 team hitting percentage. The Jumbos came back strong in the second set, committing just one error and tallying 12 kills to win, 25-15, again. Trinity kept it close in the third set, however the visitors were able to pull away and clinch the match with the 25-23 set victory.

For Trinity, sophomore Rachel Underwood continued her strong play as she led the team with eight kills and a .333 hitting clip. Senior tri-captain Randi Whitham led all players with 23 assists while first-year Colette Scheffers paced the Bantams with nine digs to go along with six kills of her own.

The Jumbos return to play on Tuesday when they host Rivier for a 4 pm contest at home in Cousens Gym.  Trinity will also play on Tuesday when they host St. Joseph with a 7 pm start.
