NORTHAMPTON / HOLYOKE, MA - The Tufts volleyball team posted three-set wins over Wheaton College and Westfield State University on Saturday to finish their stay at the 2013 Hall of Fame Invitational with a 3-0 record.
The Jumbos (17-7 overall) won 25-15, 25-20, 25-25 against the Lyons in their first Saturday match at Smith College. In a nighcap at Mount Holyoke College, Tufts trounced the Owls 25-14, 25-19, 25-8. Head coach Cora Thompson's Jumbos had a three-set win over Brandeis on Friday night for a perfect 9-0 mark in sets for the weekend.
Against Wheaton, first-year Mary Maccabee did not have an error while earning 10 kills in 21 attempts (.476). Defensive specialist Carolina Berger also scored points with three service aces, helping Tufts total eight overall. She also led Tufts with 12 digs, while junior Isabel Kuhel went up for two solo blocks and four assists.
Wheaton statistics were not available. The Lyons have lost four in a row and their record evented at 14-14 with the loss to the Jumbos.
Maccabee with seven kills, Kuhel with six and sophomore Esme Nulan with six led the Jumbos over Westfield State. First-year Emily Reder was the service leader with three aces, while junior Rebecca Rubin topped Tufts with six digs.
On the Owls' side, Nicole Molleur led with three kills while Shannon Shea served two aces. Sarah Green totaled 11 digs. Westfield State dropped to 16-14 with their second straight loss.
For Tufts, Kuhel was named to the Hall of Fame Invitational All-Tournament team for the second straight season.
