MEDFORD - Tufts won its second straight match of the day with 3-1 win over UMass-Boston in the third match of the afternoon's triple header.
The Jumbos (11-4) put together their two best sets of the season with consecutive 25-7 wins over the Beacons (8-8) in the third and fourth sets of the match. Tufts combined to hit .545 in the final two sets on 20 kills in 33 attempts with two errors. The Jumbos had no errors in the final set (10-0-13). They were errorless in the first set against Connecticut College earlier in the day. The 18 point win margins are the second best of the season for Tufts, only a 25-4 win over Regis is better.
First-year Elizabeth Ahrens (Richmond, VA) led the attack with five kills in five attempts in the final two sets. Juniors Isabel Kuhel (Brisbane, CA), Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA) and Jessica Ingrum (Highlands Ranch, CO) each had four kills in the final two sets.
Tufts put together a 13-0 run in the third set behind the serving of Kuhel which gave the Jumbos a 17-3 lead. Ingrum had four kills in the run to lead the attack.
A pair of 5-0 runs in the fourth set spurned the Jumbos onto the match win. Ingrum served in the first run and had an ace and a kill by Ahrens. In the second run Carolina Berger (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) had two aces and kills by Hopper and Mary Maccabee (River Edge, NJ) to give Tufts a 21-6 lead.
The first two sets were split with each being won 25-18, the first by the Beacons.
Ahrens and Kuhel each had nine kills and Hopper had eight. Ahrens also had six blocks. Hopper had 10 digs. Sophomore setter Kyra Baum (Boca Raton, FL) had 32 assists, two aces and eight digs.
For the Beacons Julia Murphy (Canton, MA) had a team-best seven kills. Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, MA) had six kills and four block assists. Bri Sousa (Swansea, MA) added six kills.
In the second match of the tri-match UMass-Boston defeated Connecticut College 3-1 behind 12 kills from Amber Clemons (Simi Valley, CA) and 10 kills from Murphy (Canton, MA). Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, MN) had 18 digs and Emma Rocha (Boynton Beach, FL) had 27 assists. For Connecticut College Chloe Ainley (San Jose, CA) had 15 kills and Caroline Martin (Palo Alto, CA) added 11 kills and 20 digs. Emily Aterbury(Austin, TX) had 36 assists and Jamie Balkin (Glencoe, IL) had 21 digs.
Tufts travels to western Massachusetts next weekend for a pair of NESCAC matches. On Friday night the Jumbos play Williams, who they are tied for first place with, at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday they play at Amherst in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
