|Sophomore Esme Nulan had six kills and four aces
MEDFORD – In a match that is part of the MIT Invitational, Tufts (5-1) swept Regis 3-0 to take the first of three matches played at Tufts' Cousens Gym Friday afternoon and evening.
The Jumbos had a 6-5 lead in the first set and then went on a 12-0 run as Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA) served all 12 points. Hopper had four consecutive service aces and five in the run. Tufts had nine of its match total 22 aces in the first set. A 6-0 run closed out the game for the Jumbos as Kyra Baum (Boca Raton, FL) had two aces to go with her six assists in the 25-7 win.
In the second set the Jumbos used a 9-0 run to finish off the game. With a 16-4 lead, Isabel Kuhel (Brisbane, CA) had three of the team's six aces to pace the finishing run. Hopper added three kills in the set.
Regis scored a match-high 17 points in the third set, but fell short at 25-17. Down 11 at 18-7 the Pride closed to within seven at 22-15 on a 4-0 run that featured two service aces by Marillia Ramos. First year player Mary Maccabee (River Edge, NJ) had three service aces in the set. Esme Nulan (Kansas City, MO) served six straight points for the Jumbos getting two aces and two kills by Hopper to pace the run.
Regis (3-6) was lead by Jackie Silver's four kills. Ramos had seven assists and Sara Gold added six digs.
Hopper had a team-high 10 kills for the Jumbos. Nulan played a good all-around game contributing six kills, eight digs, four aces and an assist. Two Jumbos reached double digits in assists as Baum had 15 and Sara Wojciechowski (Wellesley, MA) added 10.
