MEDFORD - In the third match of the MIT Womens Volleyball Invitational at Tufts' Cousens Gym, Springfield rallied to beat Tufts 3-1 Friday night.
Tufts (5-2) won the first set 25-21 to hand Springfield (6-0) its first set loss of the 2013 season. The teams stayed close throught the set with the biggest lead being two points on three occasions by Springfield. The set also had 16 ties with the last one at 19-19. The Jumbos took the lead for good at 20-19 on a kill by Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA). Isabel Kuhel (Brisbane, CA), Elizabeth Ahrens (Richmond, VA) and Jessica Ingrum (Highlands Ranch, CO), with the set-winner, all had kills in the Jumbos' closing 6-2 run.
All four sets were close as the Pride outscored the Jumbos 96-85 in the four sets. The biggest margin of victory was six points in Springfield's second set win, 25-19. The first and third sets were each 25-21 and the final set was 25-20.
Kuhel and Hopper led the Jumbos with 11 kills each against Springfield. Kyra Baum (Boca Raton, FL) had 37 assists. Ahrens had five kills and a season-high six blocks. Defensively Carolina Berger (Fort Lauderdale, FL) and Hopper each had 14 digs. Rebecca Rubin (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) added 10 digs. Kuhel also had a season-high six blocks.
For Springfield, Tessa Smolinski had a team-high 23 kills. She also had 12 digs and three assists. Whitney Miller had 45 assists and 14 digs. Meghan Kinee led the team with 18 digs. Kelsey McGayhey added 10 kills. Daniella Crismani had six kills and 14 digs.
Sprigfield won the battle of the Prides in the second match with a 3-0 win over Regis. Elise Brogan had nine kills and Lindsay Runge had 10 aces.
Tufts continues play in the MIT Invitational on Saturday at MIT playing Endicott at 12:00 p.m. and MIT at 2:00 p.m.
