DeSmith 6th in Pentathlon as Women's Indoor Track & Field Begins New England D3 Meet

Olivia Martin handled the third leg for the Jumbo DMR today

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Senior Kylene DeSmith finished sixth in the pentathlon to lead the Tufts University women's indoor track & field team on day one at the New England Division III Championships Friday at Bowdoin College.

DeSmith scored 3,031 points, the most by a Jumbo for the pentathlon since 2014 and a top-35 national mark. Among the five events, she tallied her most points in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.31 seconds for an 846 score. She added 628 points in the 800 meters with her 2:35.30 time. Her sixth-place tallied three team points for Tufts.

The Jumbos also scored a point in the distance medley relay where senior Julia Noble, sophomore Kristen Andersen, sophomore Olivia Martin and junior Lydia Heely ran a 12:42.21 time for eighth place.

With four points, Tufts is tied for 12th place in the team standings after one day. Williams College leads the meet heading into Saturday with 48 points.

Tufts just missed adding points in the 5,000 meters where senior Natalie Bettez's 18:07.08 was ninth and freshman Danielle Page's 18:09.71 was 10th.

The Jumbos also competed in the 4x200-meter relay and pole vault on Friday, but did not score.

Saturday's events at the New England Division III indoor meet begin at 10:30 am.
