Bowman Runs Under 17:00 in 5K to Start Women's Track Season

Jennifer Jackson ran her collegiate-best time in the 5K

BOSTON - Senior co-captain Brittany Bowman of the Tufts University women's track & field team ran 16:58.08 in the 5,000 meters at Boston University today as the Jumbos opened their 2017-18 season with a small distance crew competing at the BU Season Opener.

Run on BU's banked track, Bowman's time was converted to a 17:05.92 for national qualifying purposes. However, the original mark is the first time the Jumbo All-American has finished the 5K in under 17 minutes. Competing in a talented field of collegiate and professional runners, Bowman was 21st in the race. Her adjusted mark is at #2 on the 5K national qualifying list as the new track & field season begins. Bowman ran a 17:06.47 to earn All-American honors in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships last March.

Seven Jumbos competed at BU on Saturday overall, with three others posting career bests. Senior Evie Heffernan had a 10:52.70 mark in the 3,000 meters where she finished 24th. Junior Caitlin Porrazzo posted a PR in the 5,000 meters with an 18:27.73 finish. Sophomore Jennifer Jackson did the same with an 18:47.71 mark in the 5K.

Senior Eliza Lawless was 20th in the 3,000 meters with her 10:40.69 time. Junior Natalie Bettez competed in the 5K and crossed the finish line in 17:52.61. Senior co-captain Franchesca Burgos was also in action for Tufts (19:46.25).

Head coach Kristen Morwick's Jumbos will begin their season in full when they host the Tufts Invitational at the Gantcher Center on January 13.
