WATERVILLE, Maine – In the second half of a NESCAC double-header in Maine this afternoon, the seventh-ranked Tufts University women's tennis team earned a 7-2 victory at Colby College.
The Jumbo won 9-0 at Bates College in a match that started at 10 am. After the match they drove up to Colby and improved to 2-0 on the day with another victory. Tufts evened off at 5-5 overall and is now 4-2 in NESCAC. Colby fell to 4-4 and 0-2 in the league.
The Jumbos had a mostly easy time in doubles, including 8-4 victories in the top two spots. The freshman #1 pair of Maggie Dorr with Caroline Garrido continued to roll, while senior Tomo Iwasaki with sophomore Patricia Obeid also won. Tufts' #3 pair of junior Kat Wiley and freshman Anna Lowy defeated Carly Levitz and Lindsey Hernandez 8-6 for the sweep.
Levitz earned Colby's first point by beating Dorr in the #1 singles match 6-3, 6-0, closing the team score to 3-1 Jumbos. Levitz is a top 30 nationally ranked player.
However, the Jumbos would soon clinch the win was Iwasaki at second singles (6-2, 6-2), Obeid at #3 (6-3, 6-4) and sophomore Kiara Rose in the fourth spot (6-4, 6-3) were the next three off, all with wins, to make it a 5-1 match.
Wiley extended Tufts' advantage to 6-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Jessica Tsai in fifth singles. The sixth match went to Colby as Katharine Dougherty defeated Lowy 7-5, 6-1.
Tufts is off until hosting Brandeis on Thursday. Colby returns to action tomorrow against Amherst College.
