Women's Tennis has Two in Singles, Two Doubles Pairs Advance at ITA Regionals

WILLIAMSTOWN – The Tufts University women's tennis team had a successful opening day at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Championships hosted by Williams College on Friday.

Head coach Kate Bayard's team won seven singles matches and two doubles matches on the opening day of the event. A 64-woman singles bracket and 32-team doubles draw are being contested, with two singles rounds and a doubles round played on Friday.

Tufts sophomore Patricia Obeid and freshman Caroline Garrido both won a pair of singles matches today to advance to the round of 16 on Saturday. Jumbo doubles duos of sophomore Kiara Rose with freshman Nicole Frankel and senior co-captain Mina Karamercan with freshman Maggie Dorr played into the round of 16 with Friday wins.

All five Jumbo singles players won their opening round matches. Obeid defeated Justine Huang from Wellesley 6-4, 6-3 and then won again 6-1, 6-4 against Williams' Maxine Ng. Garrido's two wins were versus Carolina Mertz from Babson 6-3, 6-2 and Hannah Sweeney of Bates 6-2, 6-4. Obeid will face Julia Marks from Bowdoin and Garrido gets Kristina Yu from Wesleyan in the round of 16 on Saturday.

Dorr won her first-round singles match 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 against Anna Rozin of Bates, but was stopped by #1 seed Victoria Yu from Wesleyan by 6-3, 7-6 (8) scores. Rose took a 6-0, 6-3 match against Sydney Byrnes from Bates to start before falling to MIT's Ashley Teng 6-3, 7-6 (3). Frankel was very competitive, winning 7-6 (4), 6-3 against Zoe Klass-Warch from Wesleyan before battling MIT's Viktoriya Tabunshchyk in a 6-0, 6-7 (5), 16-14 loss.

Rose and Frankel combined on an 8-2 doubles win against Camilla May and May Zhu from Amherst. They will play five-seed Korina Neveux and Ng from Williams College in the second round on Saturday. Karamercan and Dorr had an 8-4 victory over Amherst's Anya Ramras and Maggie Owensby Friday. They will play Emily Roeper and Merz from Babson in Saturday's round of 16.

Garrido and Obeid suffered a first-round doubles loss on Friday.
