|Kiara Rose won a consolation singles match for Tufts|
MEDFORD – Sophomore Kiara Rose won her first-round consolation match as the Tufts University women's tennis team played on the second day of the Jumbo Invitational Saturday at Voute Courts.
Rose came from behind and won a third-set tie-breaker to defeat Daniela Alvarez from Wesleyan in a round of 16 consolation singes draw 3-6, 6-3, 10-6. Moving to the consolation quarterfinal, Rose was defeated by Camilla Trapness of Amherst 6-3, 7-5.
The Jumbos had senior Tomo Iwasaki and freshman Caroline Garrido playing in the singles draw round of 16 on Saturday, but both lost. Iwasaki was downed by Jacqueline Bukzin from Amherst (the #5 seed in the draw) 6-4, 6-0. MIT's Libby Rickeman, seeded second in the tournament, defeated Garrido 6-2, 6-1.
Six Tufts players were in the singles consolation draw overall. Though Rose was the only one to win, sophomore Patricia Obeid (2-6, 7-5, 10-5) and senior co-captain Julia Keller (6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-8) both lost competitive three-set matches.
The Jumbos have no players remaining in the tournament, which concludes tomorrow.
