MEDFORD - Second-ranked Williams College remained undefeated by topping sixth-ranked Tufts University women's tennis 8-1 in a NESCAC matchup of top 10 ITA ranked teams on Saturday. The win was Williams' 16th straight in what has been a dominant spring season for the Ephs. The match was held at Voute Courts in Medford.
Williams earned a quick 3-0 advantage after doubles play. Ephs pair Juli Raventos and Julia Cancio defeated Jumbos Mina Karamercan and Otilia Popa at No. 1 doubles, 8-1. Chloe Henderson and Mia Gancayco followed that up with an 8-2 victory for Williams at No. 3 over Kat Wiley and Zoe Miller.
Singles play featured several close matches that took three sets to decide, but the Ephs prevailed in all but one contest. Neveux took down Popa 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6. Gancayco, #50 in ITA rankings, followed up with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Miller at No. 4. That locked up the win for the visitors.
Raventos, #15 in ITA rankings, earned her second victory of the day for Williams at No. 1, besting #21-ranked Karamercan 6-3, 6-0. Tufts junior Tomo Iwasaki pushed #44-ranked Henderson to three sets at No. 3, but fell 6-4, 1-6, 10-6.
Louks also took a three-set loss at No. 2, falling to #23-ranked Leah Bush 4-6, 6-3, 10-6. Wiley gave the Jumbos their lone victory of the day at No. 5, with a hard fought 6-3, 6-7 (4), 11-9 win over Cancio to finish up the match.
Tufts celebrated Seniors Day in their final home match. Louks and classmate Zoe Miller were honored for their four years of dedication to head coach Kate Bayard's Jumbo program.
The Jumbos finish their regular season play tomorrow, traveling to face #14 Bowdoin at 1:00 p.m. Williams was initially scheduled to finish their regular season tomorrow against Hamilton, but the match has been postponed.
