#3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Uses Early Lead to Best #8 Tufts, 5-4

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team extended a 16-game winning streak, beating #8 Tufts 5-4 in a close match. The match was held on Wednesday evening in Claremont.

Otilia Popa was part of a #1 doubles win for Tufts

The third-ranked Athenas won the second and third doubles matches to gain a 2-1 edge. Kyla Scott and Juliette Martin gave Claremont an early lead, besting Lauren Louks and Zoe Miller in #3 doubles 8-1. Mina Karamercan and Otilia Popa answered for the Jumbos in the #1 match, beating 13th-ranked Nicole Tan and Lindsay Brown 8-4. Claremont regained the doubles advantage in the #2 pairing, with Catherine Allen and Caroline Cox taking down Jumbos Patricia Obeid and Kat Wiley 8-4.

The Athenas started singles play strongly and gained a quick 4-1 match advantage, with #3 ranked Allen beating Louks 6-2, 6-2, followed by #13 ranked Tan defeating Obeid 6-2, 6-4.

Tufts came back and picked up a victory in fifth singles with Miller earning a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Cox. Rebecca Berger clinched the match for Claremont in sixth singles by defeating Kiara Rose 6-2, 6-1.

The Jumbos won the final two matches of the evening to make the final match score 5-4. Tomo Iwasaki beat Scott in a closely contested match, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Karamercan, #21 nationally in singles, had a strong showing in the final match of the evening for the Jumbos, defeating #36 Brown in a back and forth match 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

Tufts finishes up their California trip on Friday with a match against Pomona-Pitzer at 5:00 p.m. Claremont is back in action on Saturday, when they will face Williams.
