Women's Tennis Begins California Trip with 7-2 Victory Over Whitman

Zoe Miller was part of an 8-0 #3 doubles win for Tufts

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The eighth-ranked Tufts University women's tennis team ran out to a 6-0 lead and cruised to a 7-2 victory against Whitman College in a match played at California State University, Northridge on Sunday. It was the Jumbos' spring trip opener.

Senior tri-captains Lauren Louks and Zoe Miller got the Jumbos off to a great start with an 8-0 victory in third doubles. Juniors Mina Karamercan and Otilia Popa were nearly as convincing with their 8-1 result in first doubles. The Blues' #1 duo of Andrea Gu and Hanna Greenberg are the #12 pair in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association doubles rankings. Sunday's middle doubles match was very competitive, but Tufts' Kat Wiley and Patricia Obeid outlasted Whitman's Lori Sheng and Mary Hill 9-7 to put the Jumbos up 3-0 heading into singles.

Wiley and Karamercan helped Tufts clinch the victory quickly. At #6, Wiley did not lose a game and Karamercan was a 6-1, 6-0 winner in the third match to give Tufts its fifth and decisive point. Miller continued Tufts' singles domination with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at #5, as did Obeid at #1 6-3, 6-0.

With the match already decided in favor of the Jumbos, Whitman's Greenberg defeated Tomo Iwasaki 6-1, 6-4 in fourth singles. The last match off was #2 where Gu defeated Louks 4-6, 7-6 (2), 10-6.

Tufts (2-1) will play the University of Chicago in Claremont on Tuesday at 3 p.m. PST. Now 6-7, Whitman is off until March 31 when they play at Seattle University.
