|Mina Karamercan played into the singles semi-finals|
CAMBRIDGE - Junior Mina Karamercan won three matches to advance to the semi-finals in the singles draw as the Tufts University women's tennis team opened its 2017-18 schedule at the MIT Invitational Friday through Sunday.
Eight singles players and four doubles pairs were in action for head coach Kate Bayard's Jumbos. In addtion to Karamercan's highlight, senior tri-captain Lauren Louks advanced to the singles consolation final for Tufts.
Seeded fourth in the singles draw, Karamercan opened with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Wesleyan's Nicole McCann in the round of 32. She advanced to the quarterfinals by taking a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 win against Amherst's Avery Wagman. Karamercan won by default to get to the semi-finals, as MIT's Elysa Kohrs, the fifth seed, withdrew. MIT's Libby Rickeman eliminated Karamercan in the semis 6-2, 6-4.
Louks, the third seed in the singles tournament, played a lot of tennis over the weekend. She lost her first-round match against MIT's Dora Tzeng 4-6, 6-3 and 14-12 in a super tie-breaker. However, Louks rallied in the consolation bracket. She posted wins over Jen Chen from Amherst (7-5, 2-6, 10-7), fifth-seed Aashli Budhiraja from Wesleyan (6-2, 3-6, 10-5) and MIT's Lara Rakocevic (6-7 (13), 6-0, 10-3). In the consolation final, Amherst's Anya Ivenitsky defeated Louks 6-0, 6-2.
Jumbo senior tri-captain Zoe Miller made it to the consolation semis before losing. After falling 6-2, 6-1 to eventual singles champion Rickeman from MIT, MIller defeated Wesleyan's Chisato Hayakawa in her first consolation match 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4). Miller then faced her teammate, freshman Margot Shea in the next consolation round. Shea, who had lost 6-1, 6-1 against Amherst's Maddie Dewire in the main draw, beat MIT's Sonya Das in consolation play 6-3, 6-3. The Jumbo verus Jumbo second round consolation match saw Miller top Shea 1-6, 7-5, 11-9. Miller was knocked out of the bracket by Ivenitsky 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.
The Jumbo doubles pair of Louks and junior Otilia Popa played into the semi-finals. They opened with an 8-2 win versus MIT's Alex Reinhart and Serena Le. The Tufts duo then defeated Wesleyan's McCann and Alissa Nakamoto 8-4 in the quarterfinals. Up against #3 seeded Vickie Ip and Jen Chen from Amherst the Jumbos dropped out with an 8-4 loss.
Tufts' Kiara Rose, a freshman, and Karamercan won a consolation match in doubles. Losing originally to Kohrs and Marina Zhang from MIT 8-6, the Jumbos won their opening consolation match 8-6 over Helen Klass-Warch and Polina Kiseleva from Wesleyan. Amherst's Kelsey Chen and Camilla Trapness defeated Rose / Karamercan in the consolation semi-finals 8-4.
The Jumbos have the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Championships coming up September 29 to October 1 at Williams College.
