Emily Bowers Named to United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America First Team

MEDFORD, Mass. – Tufts University junior Emily Bowers of the women's soccer team has been named to the 2017 United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America First Team announced recently.

In order to be eligible to receive this honor, students must maintain a 3.30 grade point average or better throughout their career, have started more than 50 percent of all games and significantly contributed to their team, be nominated by their head coach, and be a junior or above in academic standing.

Bowers is one of 12 student-athletes in the nation named to the First Team and is one of only two that represent the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).

She was also named to the All-NESCAC and the United Soccer Coaches All-Region and All-American teams as well for her play throughout the year. She also earned a spot on NESCAC's All-Academic Team for 2017.

Bowers wrapped up the season with 82 saves, which led the conference, and a .812 save percentage and 0.96 goals against average. She also recorded an assist in the team's 1-0 conference quarterfinal win over Trinity when her drop kick soared the length of the field. Head coach Martha Whiting's Jumbos had their best season in several years, finishing 10-6-3 (6-2-2 in NESCAC), advancing to the conference championship game, and earning their first NCAA berth since 2007.

In the classroom, Bowers is majoring in Biopsychology and has made the Dean's List every semester to date. Some of her related coursework includes Endocrinology, Genetics, Abnormal Psychology, and Behavioral Statistics.

On campus she has participated in activities such as Ears for Peers, a student-run support hotline that helps students figure out solutions during challenging times as well as provide alternate resources for support, and Animal Aid, which is an organization that helps Medford and Somerville residents take care of dogs. Bowers was a research intern at McLean Hospital this past summer where part of her responsibilities included researching the neurobiology of anxiety and trauma related disorders.

Along with Conor Coleman and Matt Zinner of Tufts University men's soccer, a total of three Jumbo soccer players have been named Scholar All-Americans.
