Tufts' Talia Toland Wins New England Single-handed Sailing Championship

Junior Talia Toland won the New England Single-handed title in Connecticut this weekend.

BRANFORD, Conn. – Tufts University Women's Sailing junior Talia Toland won the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association Single-handed Championship over the weekend at the Yale Corinthian Yacht Club.

The win advances Toland to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Single-handed Nationals coming up November 9-10 in Santa Barbara, California.

Racing on Saturday and Sunday for the New England title, Toland led after Saturday's seven races with a 15 score. Competing in an 11-woman field, she finished first in three of Saturday's seven races and had three seconds. She wrapped up the championship with a victory and two thirds among Sunday's four races to finish with a final total of 29.

Toland finished nine points ahead of Boston College junior Sophia Reineke, who placed second with a 38 score.

Toland was the runner-up at this event as a freshman in 2017 and finished seventh last year. She went to Nationals as a freshman and placed 12th.

"It feels great to be New England champion, especially after competing with many of these girls since high school," said Toland. "New England is one of the most competitive districts and it feels great to come away with a win.

"Because the fleet was small but competitive this weekend, it was key to have consistently top-three finishes and always fight back for every boat," she said. "Keeping a level head and sailing fast were two contributing factors to my sailing consistently."

Tufts sophomore Alexandra Talbot also qualified for the national championship with her sixth-place finish at the event, as the top six in New England will move on. Talbot had a score of 68 including a second in the ninth start and a third in the fourth.

Four Jumbos raced in the New England Championship overall today. In addition to Toland and Talbot, freshman Annika Fedde was seventh (73) and sophomore Abbie Carlson was 10th (93).

Reineke of BC, Louisa Nordstrom of Yale and Elizabeth Shanahan of BC were the other national qualifiers out of the region.
