CRANSTON, R.I. – The Tufts University women's sailing team competed at the 2nd Annual Women's Team Race National Invitational hosted by Brown University at the Ted Turner Sailing Pavilion at the Edgewood Yacht Club on Saturday and Sunday.

A young Tufts team finished in 13th place out of 13 teams at the event. They won one of 12 first-round races, then won twice in a double Silver round robin after they were not one of the eight teams to advance to the Gold Round.

Sailing for the Jumbos were junior skipper Elena Gonick, freshman skipper Alexandra Talbot and freshman skipper Lera Andres along with freshmen crews Mo Liu, Paige Tyler, Hailey McKelvie, Audrey Becker and Jessica Friedman.

The Jumbos' lone victory in the first round robin was against Penn as Tufts recorded first-, fourth- and fifth-place finishes. They also had the first-place finish against Dartmouth, though it was loss overall.

One of five teams to drop into a consolation bracket along with South Florida, Penn, Harvard and Northeastern, the Jumbos lost their first four races in that round. However, in a second round of racing they defeated both Harvard and Northeastern. They had 2-3-5 finishes against both opponents.

The host Brown Bears won the 2nd Annual Women's Team Race National Invitational with a 17-2 record, second place went to Dartmouth (14-5) and third place was MIT (13-6).

Conditions were fantastic on Saturday. After starting the day with a fickle mainly south breeze that was shifty to the west and east and between 6-10 knots, once the sun came out at around 1 pm the full southerly kicked in and the breeze built to a steady 10-15 knots.

Sunday started with a light southerly as soon as the sun came out at 3-6 knots. After getting through a bunch of races, the southerly died as some clouds rolled in and races were postponed for about 30 minutes. At around 12:45 pm, the southerly filled back in as the clouds cleared and the temps rose to around 60 degrees. The southerly slowly built throughout the afternoon up to 12 knots or so. The Gold round of the top 8 teams and a double Silver round robin for the bottom five teams was finished by the 3pm cutoff time.
