ST. MARY'S, Md. – In its spring season opener, the Tufts University women's sailing team placed 16th out of 18 teams at the St. Mary's Inter-conference regatta on Saturday and Sunday.

The Jumbos compiled scores of 180 in A division and 197 in B division for a 377 total. They were 30 behind 15th-place Michigan (347) and five in front of 17th-place Tulane (382).

Yale won the regatta with a 67-83-150 scoring line, ahead of second-place Harvard (98-74-172).

Tufts' A division dinghy had freshman skipper Abbie Carlson with senior crew Taylor Hart. They were 16th in A's and had best finishes of seventh in both the 11th and 13th races.

For B's, the Jumbos sailed freshman skipper Ann Sheridan with senior crew KK Newsham. Seventh in the 10th race of the division, they were 17th overall.

Saturday was a beautiful breezy day on the St. Mary's River. Ten races were sailed in each division. Northwest winds of 15-18 dropped gradually throughout the day to 6-10 at the end of racing. Harvard led rival Yale by five points heading into Sunday.

After a lengthy postponement on Sunday, a wild and shifty westerly filled in allowing four more races in each division. Yale went on a tear to win the event.
