Women's Sailing 9th at 1st Showcase Showdown in Maryland

Talia Toland skippered in A division for Tufts

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Jumbo women's sailing team placed ninth out of 17 teams at the first Showcase Regatta hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday and Sunday.

Featuring many of the top teams in the country, the event had two divisions which contested nine races each. The Jumbos compiled scores of 81 in A's and 92 in B's for a 173 final score. They were 17 behind eighth-place Stanford (156) and 17 in front of host St. Mary's and Bowdoin, who were tied for 10th (190).

Hobart & William Smith won the regatta convincingly with 17 in A's and 39 in B's for a 56 total. Second-place MIT compiled an 82 final score.

Tufts was ninth in A division races with sophomore skipper Talia Toland and freshman crew Ann Sheridan. They were fourth in the third race and fifth in the eight for their best finishes.

The Jumbo B team of freshman skipper Abbie Carlson with senior crew Taylor Hart placed 12th in the division. They had a best race of fourth in the fourth start while also recording a pair of sixths.

Saturday was very difficult due to light air conditions. What breeze there was came from the N/NE. On Sunday, after a couple races in a light North/Northeasterly, the breeze died and the fleet went in for an early lunch break. B division went back out on the water first and the race committee chased the wind around the dial trying to set up a course. Finally, a beautiful southerly filled at 1:30 long enough to get to nine races.
