Sailing's Carlson 4th at New England Single-handed Championship, Qualifies for Nationals

DORCHESTER – Freshman Abbie Carlson of the Tufts University sailing team qualified for the 2018 Intercollegiate Sailing Association Single-handed Championship by virtue of placing fourth at the New England Championship held over the weekend.

Carlson placed fourth out of 11 sailors at the New England single-handed event, with the top five moving on to the national championship to be held November 2-4 in Michigan. In 11 races, she compiled finishes totaling to 58. Fifth-place qualifier Hannah Steadman from Brown finished with a 61 score.

Tufts sophomore Talia Toland narrowly missed qualifying nationally. She finished seventh with a 63 score, just two points out of fifth place.

Carlson locked in her national berth by winning the 11th and final race of the New England regatta. She had only three finishes of seventh or worse during the 11 races and was the runner-up in the fourth start.

Toland had a strong start to the weekend with finishes of third, third and second in her first three races. She won the eighth start, but had a pair of 11th-place finishes which hurt her chances.

Junior Louisa Nordstrom of Yale is the New England single-handed champion after posting a 42 score this weekend. Also qualifying for nationals along with Nordstrom, Carlson and Steadman was Boston College sophomore runner-up Sophia Reineke (44) and freshman AnaLucia Clarkson from Connecticut College, who was third with a 45 score.
