2nd Varsity Eight Victory Highlights Women's Rowing Opening Day on the Malden River

MALDEN – The Tufts University women's rowing team second varsity eight won its races over Trinity and Coast Guard to highlight the Jumbos' opening day on Malden River Saturday.

For the first and second varsities, Tufts, Coast Guard, Middlebury and Trinity competed first in semi-final races with the winners moving on to face each other in a final and the loser's rowing off for third place.

In the second varsity eight, Tufts topped Trinity in its first ace of the day 7:24.15 to 7:52.42. The Jumbos advanced to the final, where they would face a Coast Guard eight which had defeated Middlebury in the semis. The Jumbos dominated the final, winning in 7:45.89 compared to Coast Guard's 8:57.89 finishing mark.

The Tufts first varsity eight had lost its semifinal versus Middlebury by less than a five-second margin (7:27.81 to 7:32.39). However, the Jumbos followed up with a 7:38.45 to 7:49.40 win over Coast Guard in the third-place race.

The probable boating for Tufts in the 1V8 entering the day was cox Jill Armenia with Erika Madrian, Camden Myles, Lauren Drohosky, Miranda Finestone, Jiana Schnabel, Maddie Orzeske, Madeleine Clarke and Sophie Bredenkamp.

For the 2V8 Annelise Ryan coxed with Emma Conroy, Libby Lichter, Prairie Hammer, Sera Busse, Laurel Haeger, Miriam Weiss, Grace Fabrycky and Polly Harrington.

Tufts also rowed in single races for the third varsity eight and a novice four. The won both – 8:39.59 to 8:51.91 over Middlebury in the novice four and 7:49.59 to 8:23.95 against Trinity for the 3V8.

Tufts' 3V8 saw cox Julia Turner with Arielle Mann, Lienne Ng, Abby Henne, Grace Duisberg, Risa Williams, Sophia Carroll, Kathryn Luhrman and Danielle Kaden. Cox Eden Miller with Lindsay Naber, Eva Elder, Nina Pittas and Leslie Spencer made up the novice four.

The Jumbos were also supposed to race a novice eight, but that race was canceled due to Trinity being unable to field a boat because of illness.

Races versus Amherst and Smith await the Jumbos on Sunday at Malden River as a busy opening weekend continues.
