MEDFORD – Senior co-captain Erica DeCandido of the Tufts University women's basketball team was named the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Player of the Week yesterday.
Head coach Jill Pace's Jumbos grabbed three wins last week with a non-league victories over SUNY Poly (79-62) and Wheaton College (91-47), as well as a win in their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opener over Wesleyan on Friday (78-60).
On Friday, DeCandido saw the floor for 39 of a possible 40 minutes and recorded a career-high 28 points on 12 for 21 shooting, including 2 for 5 from beyond the arc. She completed the double-double with 10 rebounds, six of which came from the offensive glass. DeCandido also dished out three assists, had three steals, and one block. She scored nine of her points in the fourth quarter to help secure the win for Tufts after the visiting Cardinals had pulled within nine heading into the final quarter.
DeCandido scored 13 points in 20 minutes of action in the win over Wheaton. She was 6 for 8 from the field and grabbed five rebounds. She posted all her points in the first half, which helped the Jumbos hold a 27-point halftime lead. She had added 12 points and seven rebounds to the Jumbos' Monday victory against SUNY Poly to start the week.
The 5-11 forward currently leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game. DeCandido is averaging 26.7 minutes per game while shooting 54.3 percent (88/162) from the field. She is also leading the team in rebounds per game at 8.1 and is tied for the team lead in steals per game with 2.1.
DeCandido and the 14-0 Jumbos, who are ranked #1 in the D3hoops.com national poll, return to the floor on Friday night when they head to Hamilton College for a NESCAC matchup. Tip-off is slated for 7pm.
