Three Jumbos Score in Double Figures as #1 Women's Basketball Takes Down #9 Rochester

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Tufts University women's basketball team secured a 63-51 victory Friday night over the University of Rochester at Williams College's Holiday Classic. The Jumbos are the #1 team in the national poll while the Yellowjackets were at #9 this week.

Baptista was one of two Jumbos to record a double-double tonight

For the third game in a row sophomore Erica DeCandido led the Jumbos (5-0) in scoring. She had 18 points tonight to go along with her 10 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. DeCandido wasn't the only Tufts player to record a double-double on the night. Senior Melissa Baptista had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Lauren Dillon finished with 11 points, four assists, and two steals.

The Jumbos opened the game well, outscoring the Yellowjackets (5-1) 22-9 in the first quarter. DeCandido had six points in the quarter, while Baptista, Emily Briggs, and Katie Martensen each contributed four. As a team, Tufts shot 57.9% from the field in the frame.

Senior Jennie Mucciarone wrapped the scoring in the first half for the Jumbos. With just twenty second left, she made a layup, drew a foul, and hit the free throw to complete the three-point play. She would finish the game with seven.

The second half was a bit closer than the first with Tufts only outscoring Rochester 29-28. Baptista had nine of her 13 in the half, while DeCandido had eight, and Dillon six.

With her 13 points on the night, Baptista is only nine away from joining the 1,000-point club. She would become the 14th Jumbo to do so.
