MEDFORD - Tonight at the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship banquet, junior Michela North of the Tufts University women's basketball team was announced as a Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-American.
North is one of 10 Division III players in the country, and two in New England, named to the WBCA DIII All-America Team. This marks the second year in a row that North has been honored by the WBCA. Last season, she was one of 30 players in the country named to the All-America Honorable Mention Team.
This is also the second straight year that a Tufts player has been among the 10 WBCA All-Americans. Hayley Kanner was honored last season.
The team was selected by a vote of the selection committee, which is composed of one representative from each of the nine geographical regions and a chairperson.
North is with the team in Columbus, Ohio where they will play Wartburg in the NCAA Championship semi-finals on Saturday at 5 pm. Capital University is hosting the semis.
A 6'2" center, North leads Tufts with 14.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game. She has a 51.4 field goal percentage with 170 makes in 331 attempts. North has 16 double-doubles this season including 17 points and 19 rebounds in the NCAA third round against Albright. She poured in 23 points against Moravian in the second round.
North was NESCAC's Co-Player of the Year as well as D3hoops.com Northeast Region Player of the Year.
Head coach Carla Berube's Jumbos advanced to the NCAA "Final Four" for a third consecutive season. They are 27-3 entering Saturday's semi-final.
