MEDFORD - Tufts University women's basketball head coach Carla Berube will be an assistant coach for the 2016 USA Basketball Women's U17 World Championship Team Trials coming up May 26-30 in Colorado Springs.

USA Basketball announced today that Washington University head women’s basketball coach Nancy Fahey has been appointed lead clinician for the team. She returns after serving as the lead clinician for the 2015 USA Women’s U16 National Team Trials. Coach Berube (Tufts University), Pam Crawford (Clear Springs HS, Texas) and Steve Gomez (Lubbock Christian) were announced as court coaches.

Trials for the 2016 USA Women’s U17 National Team will take place from May 26-30 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The 2016 USA U17 National Team is expected to feature 36 invited athletes and 116 applicant athletes for approximately 154 athletes total vying for 12 roster spots. The USA U17 team will play in the FIBA Americas U17 Championship from June 22 to July 2 in Zaragoza, Spain.

The coaching selections were made by the USA Basketball Women’s Developmental National Team Committee.

Berube joins USA Basketball after a 28-4 record in 2015-16 at Tufts. In her 14th season, Berube guided the Jumbos to the 2016 NCAA Division III National Championship game.

In the 2014-15 season Berube coached the Jumbos to a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) title, wins in the NCAA Regional and NCAA Sectional rounds and a berth into the NCAA Division III Final Four. Tufts finished with a 30-3 overall record and 10-0 conference mark.

Berube, who was a member of the bronze medalist 1994 U.S. Olympic Festival East Team, was presented the Pat Summitt Trophy as the 2015 United States Marine Corps / Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year.

“To be chosen as a court coach for the USA Basketball Women's U17 World Championship Team Trials is an absolute honor," she said. "I'm truly grateful to Carol Callan and USA Basketball for this opportunity to coach some of the greatest young women's basketball players in the world. It's a privilege to work with USA Basketball again after donning a USA jersey 22 years ago at the U.S. Olympic Festival.  I'm looking forward to an exciting weekend of basketball as I work alongside two phenomenal college coaches in Nancy Fahey and Steve Gomez.”
