Softball Opens NESCAC East Series Against Colby with 11-7 Victory

MEDFORD – Senior Kristen Caporelli finished 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, four rbis and two runs scored as the Tufts University softball team defeated Colby College 11-7 in NESCAC East Division action on Thursday afternoon.

Kristen Caporelli recorded a career-high three hits in today's game.

The Jumbos (23-6, 8-2 NESCAC East) lowered their magic number to clinch first place in the East to one. Tufts and Colby (4-21, 0-7 NESCAC East) play a double-header tomorrow starting at 1 pm.

Caporelli started her day with a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the first when the Jumbos scored seven times. Sophomore 2B Emma Della Volpe had started the frame with a double to straight-away center field, and junior 1B Casey Maggiore had an rbi single. Caporelli then then hit a run-scoring single in the second inning when the hosts scored three more times to lead 10-0. Sophomore SS Mia Steinberg and freshman catcher Alexis Aboulafia both singled to start the inning and scored.

The visiting Mules scored their first run in the third when freshman SS Ashley Ketchum hit a one-out single and scored on a single by freshman 1B Paige Bober. The Mules scored again in fourth as sophomore Hailey Rohall hit a lead-off single and eventually scored on a single by junior LF Carly Swartz making it 10-2.

Tufts added a single run in the bottom of the fourth when Caporelli led off with a double and scored on a base hit by junior pinch-hitter Allison Tilton for an 11-2 Jumbo advantage.

However, Colby would stave off a five-inning loss by scoring three times in the top of the fifth. Bober doubled with one out, a Jumbo outfield error extended the inning and then senior Paige Hartnett hit a two-run double off the fence in left pulling Colby to within 11-5.

Swartz walked and scored all way from first base on a Tufts throwing error during a single by freshman Laura Powell in the sixth. The Mules finished with one more in the seventh when Holton reached on a fielder's choice and scored on another Tufts error. The Jumbos had five in the game.

Sophomore Kristina Haghdan (8-2) earned the pitching win for Tufts, allowing six hits and just one earned run with six K's and four walks in six innings. Steinberg went 3 for 3 and scored twice and Aboulafia was 1 for 3 with two runs.

Colby senior reliever Holly Lallis let up four runs in 5.2 innings of decent relief. Bober was 2 for 4 for the visitors. Senior Wiley Holton (0.1 IP, 3 H, 5 ER) took the pitching loss.
