MEDFORD – The Tufts University softball team will return to NCAA Championship action as the Jumbos received an at large berth into the 2018 NCAA field today.
Head coach Cheryl Milligan's squad will play at a four-team, double elimination Regional hosted by MIT this weekend (May 11-13). Along with the host Engineers (33-7-1), Framingham State University (24-15) and UMass Boston (17-23) will be at the Regional. Tufts plays UMass Boston in the first round on Friday at 12 noon. Play continues through Sunday with the weekend's winner advancing to a Super Regional.
The three-time NCAA champion (2013-15) Jumbos are making their 17th appearance in the NCAA Tournament overall. Tufts has a 59-27 overall record in NCAA action, and has won six Regionals overall (2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2009, 2000).
Tufts enters the tournament with 29-8 overall record this spring. They won the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division pennant with a 9-2 mark. Tufts lost to Wiliams, 5-1, in the semi-finals of the conference tournament on Saturday at Amherst College. The Jumbos, who were at #15 in last week's National Fast Pitch Coaches Association Division III poll, defeated MIT 7-0 in regular-season action on April 30.
Host MIT won the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference title in dramatic fashion, walking off with a 3-2 win over Babson College in the bottom of the eighth on Sunday. Framingham State is the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference champion following a 1-0 win over Westfield State also in dramatic fashion, scoring in the bottom of the seventh. UMass Boston is the Little East Conference championship after a 4-3 win over Plymouth State on Saturday.
The NCAA Division III Softball Committee announced 62 teams that will compete in the Division III Softball Championship.
