ST. MARY'S, Md. – With their ninth-place finish at the Showcase A qualifying regatta this past weekend in Maryland, the Tufts University co-ed sailing team advanced to the Showcase finals coming up in two weeks.
The top nine of the 18 teams who were competing at the Showcase qualifier this past weekend at St. Mary's (Md.) move on to the final. Tufts compiled scores adding up to 184 in A division and 148 in B's for a 332 final. They were 14 lower than 10th-place US Merchant Marine Academy (346) for the ninth and final qualifying spot.
Eighteen races were contested in both divisions. Tufts was 12th in A division and ninth in B's. They lost a head-to-head tie-breaker with Dartmouth for eighth-place in B division.
Sophomore Charlie Hibben skippered with senior Emma Clutterbuck and freshman Harper McKerrow as crews in A division. Clutterbuck was on board for the first through 12th races and McKerrow took over for the 13th through 18th. The Jumbo A's had fourth-place finishes in the sixth, 14th and 17th races.
For B division Tufts raced with sophomore skipper Sam Merson and senior Emily Calandrella and Clutterbuck as crews. Calandrella crewed the first through 16th starts and Clutterback handled the final two races. Merson and Calandrella were third in the third race on Saturday and had two fourths later in the regatta.
Boston University, Harvard, Coast Guard, Boston College, Dartmouth, Stanford, Hobart and William Smith and host St. Mary's also qualified for the Showcase Final, which will be held October 19-20 in New London, Connecticut.
BU and Harvard tied with 224 scores atop this weekend's standings, with BU winning a tie-breaker based on number of high-place finishes to earn first place.
