BRANFORD, Conn. – Freshman skipper Charlie Hibben and senior crew Sabrina Van Mell finished second in B division racing at the Owen, Mosbacher and Knapp Trophies hosted by Yale over the weekend.
In nine races, Hibben and Van Mell posted finishes adding up to 35, just four behind B-division winners Eduardo Mintzias and Brigid Murphy from Fordham (31). The Jumbo duo won the fifth, seventh and ninth races in B's.
Tufts had two teams at the regatta. Hibben and Van Mell joined the A pair of senior skipper Jack Bitney with sophomore crew Maria Brush who were 11th in their division. They had a best finish of sixth in the seventh race.
The Hibben-Van Mell and Bitney-Brush foursome was fourth in the regatta. Their 84-35-119 scoring line was 31 behind third-place Harvard (88) and 10 ahead of fifth-place Boston University (129).
The second Jumbo team was paced by the A division tandem of freshman skipper Ansgar Jordan with sophomore crew Lindsay Powers. They were fourth in their division with a 59 score, including a win in the ninth race and two thirds in the first two races.
The B dinghy for the second Tufts boat was sophomore skipper Wells Drayton with senior crew Marisa Permatteo. They were 11th in their division with sixths in their second and third starts as their best performances.
This group was ninth out of 18 in the regatta. The Jumbos edged Connecticut College for ninth, as the Camels posted a 148 team score and Tufts was at 146 (59-87). They were seven behind eighth-place Penn (139).
Fordham won the regatta with a 38-31-69 scoring line.
Fog until 2 pm made for a short day of light air racing in a southeasterly breeze on Saturday. After another morning of fog on Sunday, a light southeasterly filled just before noon and slowly built to 10 knots while moving east resulting in a good day for racing.
