Co-ed Sailing Competes at Aaron Szambecki Team Race in Virginia, Places 8th

NORFOLK, Va. – The Tufts University co-ed sailing team finished eighth out of 10 at the Aaron Szambecki Team Race hosted by Old Dominion University on Saturday and Sunday. Tufts and Harvard were the only two New England teams at the interconference regatta.

Two round robins were sailed and Tufts did well in the first with a 5-4 record, but won only two of nine in the second. Their 7-11 overall record did not advance them to the to the Top 4.

For the first round robin, the Jumbos won against Harvard, Old Dominion, Kings Point, St. Mary's (Md.) and Standford. Harvard was one of the teams to advance to the Top 4. The Jumbos had first, second and fourth finishes versus Kings Point.

For second-round racing, Tufts' wins came against Kings Point again and Stanford. Tufts had a perfect 1-2-3 finish against Kings Point.

Charleston, George Washington, Harvard and Navy moved on to the Top 4. College of Charleston won the regatta with an 18-3 overall record. Navy was second at 16-5.

On Saturday 58 races were conducted in a 15-20 knot westerly. Round 2 as well as the Top 4 was finished on Sunday in a 6-10 knot ESE.

Competing for Tufts was freshman skipper Charlie Hibben, senior skipper Jack Bitney, senior skipper Sammy Shea and sophomore skipper Austen Freda The crews were senior Sabrina Van Mell, sophomore Maria Brush and freshman Audrey Becker.
