NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Tufts University co-ed sailing competed in a weather-shortened Hap Moore Team Race hosted by Coast Guard on Sunday and finished third.
Racing was cancelled on Saturday due to winter weather. On Sunday, racing started in a great northerly at 5-8 knots which allowed seven races to be completed. The teams were then stuck on shore until 1:30 when a southwesterly filled. Another sixteen races were completed. Although a full round-robin was not completed, the teams did finish 80-percent of the first round.
Tufts split their six races at the event with wins over Brown, Connecticut College and Yale, and losses versus Boston University, Coast Guard and Rhode Island.
The Jumbos had their best showing against Connecticut College when they sailed to finishes of first, second and fourth. They also had a first, second and fifth against Yale.
Sailing for Tufts was freshman skipper Charlie Hibben with senior crew Sabina Van Mell, senior skipper Sammy Shea with freshman crew Jessica Friedman, and senior skipper Jack Bitney with sophomore crew Hanna Brush.
Roger Williams won the regatta with a perfect 6-0 record. Tufts did not sail against the Hawks due to the shortened schedule.
