Co-ed Sailing Places 4th at Spring-Opening Sharpe Trophy Team Race

Senior Ian Morgan crewed with skipper Cam Holley at the regatta

MEDFORD – The Tufts University co-ed sailing team started its 2019 spring season with a fourth-place finish at the Sharpe Trophy Team Race hosted by Brown on Sunday.

The 2019 Sharpe Team Race Trophy became a one-day regatta after a snowstorm hit the area on Saturday. The breeze started out at 4-7 knots from the North with temps in the high 30's. Only two races were sailed in the Northerly before it dropped to nothing. After a long delay, a nice southerly breeze filled in around 12:30 pm to complete one round-robin for the eight teams. By the end of racing the breeze was up to 10-12 knots. All races were sailed in FJs just off the Edgewood Yacht Club docks.

Tufts' team included senior skipper Jackson McCoy sailing with junior crew Emma Clutterbuck and freshman crew George Sidamon-Eristoff (two races). Senior skipper Cam Holley worked with senior crew Ian Morgan, and senior skipper Chris Keller had sophomore Juliana Testa as crew.

In the one round-robin event, Tufts finished with a 4-3 record. They had wins over Harvard, MIT, Rhode Island and Yale, with losses against Bowdoin, Brown, and Dartmouth. Tufts had identical first, second and fifth finishes in their victories over Harvard, MIT and Rhode Island. The loss to Brown was a close 10-11 score.

Host Brown won the regatta by finishing with a 6-1 record and winning the tie-breaker (total points scored when tied teams met - 19) over Bowdoin and Dartmouth teams who also posted 6-1 records.
