Co-ed Sailing Races to 6th of 18 Teams at Showcase A Regatta on the Charles

Jack Bitney skippered Tufts to two B division wins

CAMBRIDGE – The Jumbo co-ed sailing team finished a solid sixth out of 18 teams at the Showcase A Regatta hosted by MIT on the Charles River Saturday and Sunday.

With a national flavor to the regatta as Stanford, South Florida and some Mid-Atlantic teams in the field, 16 races were completed in A and B divisions. Tufts scored 113 in A's and 102 in B's for a 215 total. They were 12 points behind fifth-place Stanford and had a comfortable +36 margin on seventh-place College of Charleston.

Brown University won the regatta with 90-92-182 scores, 12 in front of runner-up Hobart and William Smith Colleges (95-99-194).

The Jumbos were fourth in B division with their 102 score. Senior skippers Cam Holley and Jack Bitney shared the duties, with Holley on board for the first through 12th races and Bitney finishing up the 13th through 16th. Senior Ian Morgan crewed all 16 starts. The Jumbos won the sixth, 13th and 16th races and were third in the fourth start.

For A division, senior Jackson McCoy skippered with junior crew Emma Clutterbuck. They were fifth in the division as they won the 12th race and had thirds in the sixth, seventh and 11th starts.

Light winds from the ENE to SE at 3-7 knots made for tricky, slow sailing on the Charles River Saturday. The Brown sailors were on top after day 1 with Hobart, Bowdoin, Tufts, and MIT close enough behind to be within striking distance.

The Brown Bears were extremely consistent with light and variable SW breeze which eventually clocked all the way into the NE on Sunday. Pat Shanahan and Julia Reynolds were second in A while teammates Ragna Agerup with Abigail Konys were also second in B Division for a combination which beat the runner ups from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Stanford's Jacob Rosenberg with Kathryn Booker took B Division honors while Bowdoin's Matt Kaplan with Louisa Lindgren came out on top of the very tough A Division.
