Co-ed Sailors Place 14th at Brown's Sherman Hoyt Trophy

Jack Bitney skippered in B division for the Jumbos

CRANSTON, RI – The Tufts co-ed sailing team finished 14th in the 18-team Sherman Hoyt Trophy hosted by Brown University on Saturday and Sunday.

The Jumbos compiled scores of 139 and 99 across 11 races in an A and B division, respectively. Tufts' 238 total was six behind 13th-place finisher Rhode Island (232) and six in front of Vermont, who was 15th with a 244 score. Harvard won the regatta with a 137 score, 69 in A's and 68 in B's.

The pair of senior skipper Jack Bitney and senior crew Ian Morgan placed ninth in the B division for the Jumbos. They took the position by winning a head-to-head tie-breaker over Boston College. Tufts won both the second and 10th starts, and had a runner-up effort in the fifth race. They would have finished even better if not for a disqualification in the seventh race.

Tufts' A division dingy with freshmen skippers Sam Merson and Charlie Hibben paired with junior Emily Calandrella and senior Sabrina Van Mell as crews was 16th in the division. Merson skippered races 1-10 with Calandrella, while Hibben and Van Mell worked the 11th start. Tufts was fourth in the seventh start for its best finish.
