WILLIAMSTOWN – Freshman Ben Stein of the Tufts University men's outdoor track & field team is tied for second place after five events of the decathlon at the New England Division III Championships hosted by Williams College on Thursday.
Stein compiled 3,171 points in the 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 meters. He is tied with Bates College junior Brendan Donohue. Husson University sophomore Cayd Wortman leads the 11-man field with 3,268 points.
Stein won the long jump with 21'8 ¼" (6.61m) distance, scoring 723 points. His top-scoring event was the 400 meters, where his 51.76 time was second and tallied 735 points. He added 659 points in the 100 (11.96), 627 in the high jump (5'10' ¾" – 1.80m) and 427 in the shot put with a 29'7 ¼" (9.02m) heave.
His 400 time was a season-best, 2.38 seconds better than his previous mark of 54.14. The high jump was his outdoor season-best.
The 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500 meter run will be contested on Friday to finish the multi-event.
