|Ben Stein won the 1,500 meters face at the Aztec Invitational decathlon today.|
SAN DIEGO – Freshman Ben Stein of the Tufts University men's outdoor track & field team had an excellent second day in the decathlon competition at the 41st annual Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State University on Friday.
With 3,012 points scored in five events on Thursday, Stein was in 10th place out of 14 competitors. He moved up five spots on Friday to finish fifth in the event among 12 athletes who finished all 10 events. Stein scored a total of 5,689 points.
Stein won the 1,500-meters portion of the decathlon on Friday with a 4:35.10 time. That scored him 711 points. His time of 16.67 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles accumulated 659 points. He was fifth in the pole vault clearing 11'9 ¾" (3.60m) and adding 509 points.
Early in the spring season, Stein's 5,689 mark is ranked second among Division III decathletes.
The Aztec Invitational decathlon featured an eclectic group of competitors from NCAA Division I, II and III as well as unattached athletes. The event was won by Biola University junior Nathanie Belden with 6,120 points.
The Tufts team is in San Diego on spring break. The Jumbos will compete in Point Loma Nazarene University's Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.
