LEWISTON, Maine - The #15 Tufts University men's tennis team fell to #24 Bates College in a top-25 matchup on Friday afternoon, 7-2. The match featured the first of three ranked NESCAC opponents for the Jumbos this weekend, and was played in Lewiston. Bates represented the fourth consecutive top-25 opponent the Jumbos have squared off against.
Ben Rosen and Jacob Kauppila defeated Tufts pair Zain Ali and Carl-Herman Grant at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. Boris Sorkin and Rohan Gupte earned the Jumbos' first victory of the afternoon at No. 2, taking down Josh Leiner and Josh Quijano 8-5.
The Bobcats extended their lead in singles play. Gupte (#34) and Rosen (#32) faced off at No. 1 in a matchup of ranked ITA players, with Rosen coming out on top 6-2, 6-2. Ali fell to Quijano at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2.
Sorkin was a bright spot for the Jumbos on the afternoon, earning his second victory of the day by beating Leiner in a match that took three sets to decide at No. 3 - 6-4, 2-6, 10-7. Bates' Kauppila earned another win for the Bobcats at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Grant.
Jumbos sophomore Niemiec lost to Nick Glover at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2. Bobcats sophomore Jacob Eisenberg took down Zach Shaff in a tight matchup in the No. 6 match 7-5, 6-4.
Head Coach Karl Gregor's Jumbos travel to face off against #27 Rensselaer tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Bates returns to action on April 23, when they travel to take on Colby at 4:00 p.m.
