Men's Tennis Competes at MIT Invitational Over Weekend

Zach Shaff won two doubles matches with partner Ben Battle

CAMBRIDGE - The doubles team of senior tri-captain Benjamin Battle and sophomore Zach Shaff played into the quarterfinal round to highlight the Tufts University men's tennis team's weekend at the MIT Fall Invitational Friday through Sunday.

Battle and Shaff opened play with an impressive 8-5 win over William de Quant and Andre Xiao from Middlebury, the #5 seed in the doubles draw. That moved the Jumbo pair out of the round of 32 and into the round of 16, where they won 8-5 over Wesleyan's Cam Daniels and Zach Fleischman. Battle and Shaff were eliminated in the quarterfinals where they lost 8-2 to #4 seed Zach Bessette and Kevin Ma from Amherst.

The Jumbos had four doubles teams in action overall this weekend, and three won first-round matches. Freshman Carl-Herman Grant and sophomore Ethan Bershtein won 8-4 against Williams' Arturo Kam and Calvin Chung in opening-round action. The Jumbo duo lost 8-4 to Amherst's Jayson Fung and Ethan Hillis in the second round. Tufts seniors Zain Ali and Rohan Gupte had an 8-4 win over Brandeis' Jackson Kogan and Rajan Vohra in their Friday-night opener. Sean Wei and Nathan Kaplan from Amherst knocked out Ali and Gupte 8-4 in round of 16 play.

Eight Tufts players were in the 64-man singles draw. Three won matches - Ali, senior tri-captain Danny Coran and freshman Boris Sorkin. Coran topped Wesleyan's Jonathan Holtzman in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-1) on Friday. Nate Eazor from Middlebury defeated Coran in the round of 32 by 6-2 and 6-4 scores. Ali, who earned a 9-16 seed in the singles draw, opened with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 win over Sean Ko from host MIT. Ali batted three sets again before falling to Gil Roddy from Bowdoin in the second round 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. Sorkin, also a 9-16 seed, came back from down a set to defeat Brandeis' David Aizenburg on Friday 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. The reverse occurred in the round of 32, as Charles Deng from MIT overcame Sorkin's one-set lead to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Five Jumbos played in the singles back draw and one pair was in the doubles back draw. Sophomore Ben Biswas advanced to the semi-finals of the singles consolation. He had wins over Zach Cihlar from Brandeis (6-4, 6-4), Larry Zhao from Bowdoin (6-1, 1-6, 10-5) and Justin Patel from Bowdoin (6-4, 6-2). Biswas lost 6-3, 6-3 to Timo van der Geest in the singles consolation semis. Battle and Grant both won singles back draw matches on Saturday.

The Tufts pair of freshman Niko Hereford and junior Ross Kamin won by default in the doubles back draw opening round and then lost 8-2 to Victor Cheng and Albert Go from MIT 8-2.
