Men’s Tennis Competes in a Pair of Third-Round Matches at the ITA Regional Tournament Saturday

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Tufts University men's tennis team competed in a pair of third-round matches during second-day action at the ITA Regional Tournament Saturday at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The tournament will conclude Sunday with semifinal and final matches in the singles and doubles brackets. 

Vlad Murad of Colby will compete against Michael Arguello of Brandeis in the semifinal round on one side of the 64-player single bracket, while the other matchup will feature Josh Marchalik of Amherst and Lubomir Cuba of Middlebury. The winner of each matchup will advance to the final round. 

In the doubles bracket, Alex Taylor and Brian Grodecki of Williams will compete against Kyle Wolfe and Yangeng Jiang of Bowdoin in one semifinal matchup, while the other tilt will feature Hamid Derbani and Kyle Schlanger of Middlebury against Cuba and William de Quant of Middlebury. The victorious pairs will advance to the final round. 

During second-day action for the Jumbos, freshmen Zach Shaff and Nathan Niemiec competed against Cuba and de Quant of Middlebury in the third round, but the two individuals fell short, 8-1. Shaff and Niemiec posted a pair of victories Friday in the first and second rounds. 

Juniors Rohan Gupte and Zain Ali also competed in third-round action, as they fell to Wolfe and Jiang of Bowdoin, 8-2. The two Jumbos defeated Ben Roque and Dan Levitan of Babson, 8-1, during second-round action Friday. 

The Jumbos will not have anyone competing in day-three action Sunday at the ITA Regional Tournament in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Next on the radar for the Jumbos will be the Bates Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 8 – Sunday, Oct. 9, in Lewiston, Maine. The squad will then conclude the fall portion of its schedule with the MIT Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 15 – Sunday, Oct. 16, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
