|Andrew Lutz had wins in doubles and singles for Tufts
WATERVILLE, ME - After fighting hard for a 2-1 lead in doubles, the Tufts men's tennis team swept singles quite handily to post an 8-1 victory at Colby College in a NESCAC match played on Wednesday afternoon.
The win was vital for Tufts as it looks to improve its chances for one of sixth berths into the NESCAC Championship coming up May 3-5. The Jumbos are now 4-4 in conference play and 9-5 overall. Colby dropped to 9-5 and 1-4 NESCAC.
The doubles matches were tightly contested. The third Tufts tandem of senior co-captain Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Brian Tan (Orinda, CA) joined the #1 team of senior Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA) and freshman Rob Jacobson (Winnetka, IL) in posting 8-6 victories. Tufts was close to earning a doubles sweep, but Colby's Jack Bryant and Matt Carroll won 9-7 in the second match.
Freshman Jay Glickman (Chappaqua, NY) started Tufts' roll in singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #2. Lutz brought the Tufts lead to 4-1 with another easy win, 6-0 and 6-3 on the third court. The clincher came from Tan, who won 7-5 and 6-2 in sixth singles.
Jumbo freshman Nick Telkedzhiev (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) defeated Colby's Jason Ottomano in the #1 singles match 6-3 and 6-4. Junior Austin Blau (Roslyn, NY) and Jacobson took third-set super tie-breakers to win the fourth and fifth singles matches, respectively, for Tufts.
The Jumbos play at Bowdoin in NESCAC action on Friday at 3 pm. Colby has a conference date at Wesleyan on Saturday at 9:30 am.
