Jumbo Men's Tennis Closes California Trip With 8-1 Victory over Babson College

CLAREMONT, CA - The Tufts men's tennis team concluded its California spring break trip with a 3-1 record after defeating local rival Babson, 8-1, on Friday in a match played at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

The Jumbos return home with a 5-1 overall record for 2012-13 and open their NESCAC season against Bates next Saturday (Mar. 30) at 11 am. With the loss Babson drops to 4-4 overall. The Beavers come home and play at Brandeis next Thursday.

Tufts swept doubles, all by 8-6 scores. The #1 combo of senior Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA) and Rob Jacobson (Winnetka, IL), the #2 duo of senior tri-captain Mark Westerfield (Menlo Park, CA) with freshman Nick Telkedzhiev (Plovdiv, Bulgaria), and the #3 pair of senior tri-captain Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, MD) and junior Matt Pataro (Miami, FL) all helped the Jumbos take a 3-0 lead.

Wins by sophomore Brian Tan (Orinda, CA) at #6 singles and junior Austin Blau (Roslyn, NY) at #4 clinched the win for Tufts.  Tan lost just three games and Blau gave up only four. Telkedzhiev and Jacobson added singles wins at #2 and #5, respectively, to their doubles victories. Freshman Jay Glickman (Chappaqua, NY) was a straight-set winner for the Jumbos on the third court.
