|Sophomore Brian Tan was a finalist in the D flight
LEWISTON, ME - Sophomore Brian Tan (Orinda, CA) advanced to the finals of the Wallach Invitational Singles "D" flight while representing the Tufts men's tennis team at Bates College on Saturday and Sunday.
Tan opened with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Amherst's Phillip Qu. In the quarterfinals, he worked hard to come from behind for a 2-6, 6-3, (10-3) win over Jack Welch from Middlebury. He then earned a spot in the finals with a 6-4, 6-1 semi-final victory against Cosmin Bardan from host Bates. Playing Amherst's Michael Solimano in the final, Tan lost 6-4 and 6-3.
Junior Austin Blau (Roslyn, NY) played into the semi-finals of the "C" flight for the Jumbos. He started in the round of 16 against Skidmore's Gabe Steerman, winning 6-4, 4-6, (10-3). He then knocked out Amherst's Brenton Amaboldi 6-3, 6-4. In the semis, he lost to eventual flight champion Chase Savage from Bowdoin 7-5, 6-0.
In other Jumbo action, senior Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA) won his opening match in the "A" flight 2-6, 6-2, (10-3) against Surain Asokaraj from Amherst. He lost to Bowdoin's Casey Grindon in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-1. Likewise, senior tri-captain Mark Westerfield (Menlo Park, CA) won a match in the "D" flight. He topped Bates' Dylan Reffe 6-3, 7-6 (2) before losing to eventual flight champion Solimano 7-5, 6-2.
The Jumbos did not win any of their four first-round matches in doubles.
Tufts is off until playing their first and only dual match of the fall season on October 20 at home against Coast Guard (11 am).
