Men's Tennis Team Debuts with Good Performances at Middlebury Invitational

Sophomore Brian Tan helped Tufts advance to the semi-finals in B doubles

MIDDLEBURY, VT - Two singles players and a pair of doubles tandems reached the semi-finals as the new-look Tufts men's tennis team opened its 2012-13 season at the Middlebury Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.

Freshman Jay Glickman (Chappaqua, NY) played into both the A singles semi-finals and into the B doubles semis with sophomore teammate Brian Tan (Orinda, CA). In singles, Glickman rolled past Vassar's Andrew Guzik in the first round 6-1, 6-0. In a quarterfinal match against Middlebury's Alec Parower, Glickman persevered to win 6-3, 1-6, (16-14). Into the semis, Glickman lost 7-6 (3), 6-1 against Matt Bettles from Bates.

Glickman and Tan faced teammates Karl Wilander (Hailey, ID) and Josh Girson (Prairie Valley, KS) in their B doubles opener and won 9-7. They advanced to the semis 8-2 over David Yovanoff and Michael Secular from Brandeis. The run ended with an 8-3 semi-final loss against Kit Green Sanderson and Nick Tong from Skidmore.

Senior tri-captain Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, MD) won twice to reach the semi-finals in the B singles flight. He topped Brandeis' Yovanoff 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the first round, then got by Peter Heidrich from Middlebury 6-2, 5-7, (10-4). Skidmore's Alec Hoblitzell defeated Lutz in the semis 7-5, 6-4, and went on to win th B flight.

Jumbo junior Austin Blau (Roslyn, NY) and senior tri-captain Mark Westerfield (Menlo Park, CA) cruised into the B doubles semi-finals with a 8-4 victory over Bates' Eric Ruta and Jesse Butler, and then an 8-2 final versus Brandeis' Ben Fine and Robert Xie. The Jumbo pair was eliminated in a hard-fought 9-7 match against Pierre Planche and Henry Lee from Bates, the eventual flight champions.

Head coach Jaime Kenney's team plays next at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships September 28-30 at Williams.
