Santos Selected NESCAC Men's Soccer Rookie Of The Year And To All-Conference First Team

MEDFORD - After emerging as one of the most talented and exciting players in the league this fall, freshman Gus Santos (Framingham, MA) of the Tufts men's soccer team was chosen as the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Rookie of the Year for 2011 when the All-Conference Teams were announced today.

Santos was the leading scorer for Coach Josh Shapiro's upstart Jumbo squad that finished 5-3-2 in the conference and 9-4-3 overall. He's currently fourth in the NESCAC scoring race with 20 points on seven goals and six assists. The six assists put him in a three-way tie for first in the league. Four of his goals were game-winners, tied for second-best in NESCAC.

An explosive player on the left wing, Santos was a threat whether with or without the ball. He scored the team's lone goal in a 1-0 overtime victory against NCAA qualifier Trinity. He also added a goal and an assist to Tufts' 3-2 overtime victory at Bates.

The First All-NESCAC player for the Jumbos since 2008, Santos is also the first freshman non-goalie to earn All-Conference First Team honors since the NESCAC began recognizing First and Second Teams in 1997.
