MEDFORD – Eight members of the Tufts University men's lacrosse team have been selected to the 2019 New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division III All-New England teams announced today.
The eight honorees match Amherst College for the most in the region. The Jumbos (19-1) and the Mammoths will play in the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals on Wednesday at Bello Field. Tufts' eight All-New England recipients matches the Jumbo program's most since 2016.
On the first team for Tufts is senior attack Danny Murphy, junior midfielder Matt Treiber and senior defenseman Arend Broekmate. Three Jumbos also made the second team with senior attack Ben Connelly, junior midfielder Nick Shanks and senior long-stick midfielder Stewart Stockdale. Junior goalie Mason Pollack and sophomore face-off man Kyle Helfrich are on the third team.
Broekmate, Connelly and Murphy all earned their third All-New England honor. Broekmate was third team in 2018 and second team in 2017, Murphy received second team in 2018 and first team in 2017 and Connelly was also third team 2018 and second team 2017. Garnering their second All-New England accolades this spring were Treiber (also second team in 2018) and Shanks (first team 2018). Helfrich, Pollack and Stockdale are All-New England for the first time.
Tufts has New England's second-highest scoring offense with 17.80 goals per game. Murphy leads the Jumbos with 88 points on 47 goals and 41 assists, while Connelly has 56 goals with 20 assists for 76 points. Treiber (32-30-62) and Shanks, who has 27 goals and 15 assists for 42 points in 16 games, are also key offensive contributors.
Broekmate's 47 groundballs lead the defensive unit and he has also caused 12 turnovers and scored two goals with three assists. Stockdale has accumulated 17 caused turnovers and 46 groundballs, while Pollack has a .537 save percentage with 201 saves overall for a team allowing a 10.74 goals against average.
Helfrich's 248 face-offs victories this season are 16th most in the NCAA Division III and third in New England. He has a .562 success rate in 441 total draws and has score twice with an assist.
