Pollack Scores, Makes 19 Saves, Wins Men's Lax Player of the Week for Amherst Performance

MEDFORD – Contributing offensively and defensively to the Tufts University men's lacrosse team's win at Amherst College on Saturday, Jumbo junior goalie Mason Pollack has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week.

Pollack finished with a season-high 19 and saves and scored a goal – his second of the season – as the Jumbos won 15-14 over the Mammoths in a battle between top NESCAC teams. Tufts was ranked sixth nationally entering the contest and Amherst was fifth.

After Tufts won the opening face-off, the ball went to Pollack. He juked an Amherst player and began charging up the left side of the field. After getting around another Amherst defender, Pollack fired a shot from seven yards out to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Pollack and the Tufts defense shut out Amherst in the first quarter including four saves by the goalie. He had four more in the second, five in the third and six in the fourth. The Mammoths had rallied to tie the game at 14-14 before Tufts sophomore Garrett Samuelson scored with 3:15 remaining in regulation to give the Jumbos a lead. Pollack made two saves in the final three minutes to help protect it.

This is Tufts' third Player of the Week honor for 2019 in the eight weeks it has been presented. Pollack joins teammates Danny Murphy (March 25) and Max Waldbaum (March 4) as recipients. Pollack is the first Jumbo goalie to win the honor since Patton Watkins in May 2014. He's the first goalie on any team to be recognized by the league since March of last season.

He's currently fifth in the NESCAC with a .555 save percentage on 126 saves and 101 goals against. He also scored a goal in the first game of the season at Hamilton.

Tufts (11-1, 6-1 NESCAC) hosts Bates College in a match-up between the teams tied for first place atop the conference standings on Tuesday night at 7 pm.
