CLINTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Max Waldbaum scored six times and Tufts junior goalie Mason Pollack also scored as the Tufts University men's lacrosse team earned a 20-11 NESCAC win at Hamilton College in their 2019 season opener on Saturday.
|Goalie Mason Pollack had 17 saves and scored a goal for the Jumbos|
The Jumbos trailed 4-3 at the end of the first quarter and were tied 5-5 in the second before a four-goal run gave them a 9-5 cushion at halftime. Tufts then out-scored the Continentals 8-4 in the third to pull away.
Hamilton (0-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead four minutes into the game on goals by Chad Morse and Zach Larsen. The Continentals were led by three goals with an assist from Chris Conley overall.
Tufts tied the game at 2-2 with goals by senior All-American Danny Murphy and senior Nick Katz. Over the final seven minutes of the opening period, Henry Hunt and Conley goals for the Continentals sandwiched Waldbaum's first of the game for Tufts giving the hosts a 4-3 lead.
After a seven-goal first quarter, the teams didn't score until the second quarter was almost halfway through as Waldbaum's goal tied the score at 4-4. The Jumbos wouldn't trail from that point, though another Conley goal for Hamilton had made it 5-5 with 6:57 on the second-quarter clock.
That's when Tufts started it's four-goal stretch with strikes by senior co-captain Ben Connelly, Waldbaum again, sophomore Garrett Samuelson, and junior Matt Treiber giving the Jumbos a 9-5 advantage heading into halftime.
Hamilton stayed in it scoring two of the first three goals in the second half, both by Morse including a man-up tally. Leading 10-7, the Jumbos put some space between the teams as Pollack the goalie, Murphy, Walkbaum and Treiber (man-up) scored for a 14-7 Jumbo lead. Though official records are unclear, it's believed to be the first Tufts goal by a goalkeeper in more than 25 years.
Hamilton's Henry Hunt stopped the Tufts run at 4:24 of the third, but the Jumbos added the next three by Connelly, Waldbaum and junior Evan Kulpan to lead 17-8. Hunt scored again for Hamilton with just eight seconds remaining in the third.
Into the fourth, Jumbo newcomers who got a chance to play put their names on the scoresheet as Jack Reid (assist by Cam Kelleher), Cole Salton (assisted by Reid) and Jensen Corabi (man-up assisted by Mac Bredahl) tallied. Conley and Henry Hill had fourth-quarter goals for Hamilton.
In addition to Waldbaum's six goals, Murphy finished with two goals and three assists and Treiber collected three goals with an assist for Tufts. Pollack made 17 saves in goal along with scoring once. Senior All-American Arend Broekmate scooped up four groundballs.
Hunt and Morse joined Conley in scoring three times for Hamilton. Goalie Max Scheidl stopped 22 shots while James Sanderson finished with four groundballs.
Tufts out-shot Hamilton 67-40 including 42-28 on goal. Face-offs were close (18-16) in favor of Tufts, while Hamilton had a slight 38-35 advantage in groundballs. Tufts was 2 for 4 man-up and Hamilton was 1 of 7.
The Jumbos get right back at it tomorrow at #17 Cortland in a 1 pm start. Hamilton is next in action on Wednesday at Utica.
