HARTFORD – In their season-opening event on Sunday, the Tufts University men's rowing team earned a second-place finish in the Open double and had two boats in the top three in the Open quad.
The Jumbos were at the Head of the Riverfront, a 2.5 mile course on the Connecticut River.
Jumbos placed second, fourth, fifth, and eighth among nine boats in the Open 2X. The top Tufts boat, which was manned by senior co-captains Harris Hardiman-Mostow and Mats Edwards, finished with a time of 17:14.42. Tufts' second-place pair led all collegiate entries.
In the Open quad event Tufts placed both of their boats on the podium, with one on the top step and the other in third. Sophomore stroke Alex Williams, senior Matt Agurcia, sophomore Jack Batchelor, and senior Peter Malinovsky were all in the first-place boat as they finished with a time of 15:36.40, more than a minute faster than the second-place team. The third-place Jumbo team crossed the line with a time of 16:51.80.
In the eights, the Jumbos had three boats in the 14-team race. The top Tufts boat placed seventh with a time of 15:04.57. The Jumbos also placed eighth and 10th with times of 15:19.42 and 15.40.61, respectively.
In the Mixed Open 8+, the Jumbos entered four boats and won the race. The winning boat was represented by freshman coxswain Alex Janoff, freshman Eden Simko, sophomore Alicia Heia, freshman Nicholas Kuranda, freshman Alex Maykel, freshman Thomas Muller, freshman Ethan Bayer, sophomore Tina Feng, and sophomore Sidney Tanioka. They finished with the top time of 16:41.62. The other Jumbo boats finished third, fourth, and fifth, and crossed the line with times of 17:09.72, 17:35.96, and 17:37.83, respectively.
Tufts returns to action on the 19th and 20th of the month at the prestigious Head of the Charles.
